Teeth Whitening

Teeth Whitening in Jackson provided by Drs. Bookman, Goldberg, and Seto at .

Close up comparison of before and after teeth whitening treatment on a Black man's smileOne thing we all share in common is our appearance. We worry about how we look to others around us. Every morning, we spend time in front of the mirror, trying to present the best version of ourselves. We choose clothes accenting our body type. We spend hundreds of dollars a year on haircuts. Makeup is used to cover blemishes and accentuate facial features. While all those things do concern our appearance, what do people tend to notice first? It is not our clothes or our hair. No, the first thing people tend to notice is our smile. Over time, our teeth can become discolored and not look as bright as they once did. This can be especially true for those patients who drink coffee or tea or who smoke. All of those activities can affect how our tooth enamel looks. Enamel is porous, which means it can absorb stains from the foods and drinks we ingest.

How do patients cope with these problems? One option they can utilize is to have a whitening procedure performed by a dental professional. It takes just a single office visit and can be done in less than an hour. For those patients who have been thinking about doing something about brightening their smiles, please come into our office to find out more. Come see us today at Artistic Dental.

Concerns About Whitening

Teeth whitening commercials bombard us each and every day. They are all over television and social media. They assure everyone how easy it is to have a brighter smile. The ads harp on the fact they are far less expensive than professional whitening treatments. Why would anyone not consider it? It sounds like a great deal.

Regardless of what the ads say, there are risks associated with the at-home whitening kits advertised. They could damage teeth and gums permanently. It should be noted the at-home kits do not last as long as the professional treatments. One concern is that over-the-counter treatments can overexpose the sensitive tissues to harsh chemicals.

Over-the-counter Solutions vs. Professional Solutions

The truth is in the details. The at-home kits have a different level of carbamide peroxide solutions than the professional treatments. The at-home kits have between 10-20% carbamide peroxide, while the professional ones are approximately 40%. With a much higher concentration in the whitening solution, the effects last much longer.

With so many patients suffering oral cavity damage using at-home kits, the American Dental Association had to issue warnings. They state that at-home kits can cause irreparable damage when improperly used. This damage can occur to the teeth, cheek linings, tongue, or soft tissues of the gums. In most cases, the damage cannot be repaired. It is permanent.

Zoom Teeth Whitening vs. Over the Counter Trays

What is Zoom Teeth Whitening

Zoom whitening is a professional in-office whitening system, designed to whiten both your enamel and your dentin. The gel used in the Zoom system is light-activated. The main ingredient in the bleaching agent is hydrogen peroxide. When exposed to the light, the hydrogen peroxide is broken down. It enters the enamel and dentin, bleaching any substance that is discolored. The structure of your teeth remains unaltered in the process.

The entire procedure is completely safe and takes just over an hour. Before your whitening treatment, your teeth are cleaned. Then use a special device to hold your mouth open, exposing the teeth visible in your smile. A special gel is applied to your gums, which protects them from the bleaching agent. The agent is then applied to your teeth and left for an hour. In just one treatment, results are noticeable right away, getting your teeth, on average, eight shades whiter.

It is important to note that whitening is not a permanent treatment. We will provide you with a set of home care instructions to help prolong the results.

Over the Counter Whitening Trays

Sure, you can use over the counter whitening products to whiten your teeth. However, these products can take weeks, or even months, to whiten your teeth only a few shades. With Zoom in-office whitening, your teeth are whitened up to 8 shades in just one short treatment.

FAQs

What is teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is a cosmetic dental procedure that lightens the color of teeth and removes stains and discoloration. It is one of the most popular dental procedures because it can significantly improve the appearance of your teeth.

What are the benefits of teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening can boost your confidence and make you feel more attractive. It helps to remove stains caused by coffee, tea, wine, tobacco, and certain foods, leading to a brighter, more youthful smile.

What types of teeth whitening treatments are available?

There are several types of teeth whitening treatments available, including in-office professional whitening, take-home whitening kits from your dentist, and over-the-counter whitening products. In-office whitening typically provides the fastest and most dramatic results.

Is teeth whitening safe?

Yes, teeth whitening is considered safe when performed by a dental professional or when using dentist-approved products. However, it is important to follow the instructions provided to avoid potential side effects such as tooth sensitivity or gum irritation.

How long do the results of teeth whitening last?

The longevity of teeth whitening results varies depending on factors such as diet, oral hygiene, and lifestyle habits. Generally, the effects can last from several months up to three years. Regular touch-ups and avoiding staining foods and drinks can help maintain the results longer.

Can anyone get their teeth whitened?

Most people can benefit from teeth whitening, but it may not be suitable for everyone. Individuals with gum disease, tooth decay, or sensitive teeth should consult with their dentist before undergoing whitening treatment. Additionally, teeth whitening is not recommended for pregnant or nursing women.

What should I expect during an in-office teeth whitening procedure?

During an in-office teeth whitening procedure, your dentist will first clean your teeth to remove any plaque and debris. A protective barrier will be placed on your gums, and then a whitening gel will be applied to your teeth. The gel may be activated by a special light or laser. The process usually takes about an hour, and you can expect your teeth to be several shades whiter.

Are there any side effects of teeth whitening?

Some people may experience temporary tooth sensitivity or gum irritation after teeth whitening. These side effects usually subside within a few days. Using toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth and following your dentist's post-whitening care instructions can help minimize discomfort.

How much does teeth whitening cost?

The cost of teeth whitening can vary depending on the type of treatment and the dentist's fees. In-office professional whitening tends to be more expensive than take-home kits or over-the-counter products. Consult with your dentist to get an accurate estimate for your specific situation.

Does insurance cover teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is usually considered a cosmetic procedure and is not typically covered by dental insurance. However, it's always a good idea to check with your insurance provider to understand your coverage options.
